Phytotherapy and Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common form of vaginal dysbiosis, in which protective Lactobacillus bacteria decrease while other bacteria, including Gardnerella, become more dominant.
Research into phytotherapy is exploring how different plant compounds interact with this complex vaginal ecosystem. Botanicals such as oregano, Ceylon cinnamon, Hydrastis, Phellodendron, Coptis and Inula are particularly interesting because their compounds have been studied for antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties, as well as their potential role in supporting a balanced microbial environment.

What does the research tell us about these plants, their different mechanisms and their relevance to bacterial vaginosis?
